One of the great pains of being a catcher is carrying your catching gear. To carry around our gear, we have to lug around huge bags that can fit our shin guards, chest protector, helmet, gloves, and anything else we need for any other aspects of the game. One change recently to the standard baseball bag that many players are accepting is the baseball bag on wheels.

Catcher's baseball bag with wheels

Baseball catcher’s bag with wheels for easy travel.

A bag with wheels is nothing new. This was first seen on luggage bags and has now carried over to baseball bags. The reason for having a bag with wheels of the catcher is that he take the pressure off our shoulders from carrying our heavy bags. Carrying these heavy bags with the shoulder strap resting on our shoulders can cause terrible damage to which ever shoulder is on. If you carry your bag with a strap on your throwing shoulder, you may experience pain that may linger and cause a hindrance for you during practices and games. By using a bag that has wheels will help prevent injuries such as stated above.

One problem with having a bag with wheels is going to across grass and dirt. The wheels on the bag are usually small and are smooth all around which don’t give great traction. These two factors can cause the bag to tip or go off balance pretty easily. So when you’re pulling your bag you have to be mindful of the path you’re taking your bag through.

Even though there are a couple of downsides to a bag with wheels, the pros far outweigh them. I myself suffered through many years of carrying around a big bag with catcher’s gear inside. I did not make the switch to a bag with wheels until high school after I started having major arm problems. My coaches and I both agreed that caring around a bag with all my gear in it and the strap on my shoulder was one of the factors towards my shoulder pain. It was one of the best decisions I ever made relating to baseball.

I will admit I was a little embarrassed by the look of it as no one else I saw in my league use that type of bag. Being the only guy who had that type of bag made me feel like an outsider as those outside the norm. But soon after I started using my bag other guys caught on and start using a bag just like mine. The other players start noticing the benefits of a bag they can pull over a bag they have to strap over their shoulder and carry.

Hopefully learn the benefit of a baseball catchers bag with wheels that you will consider buying one to help prevent shoulder pain in your future. Do not be ashamed of the bag if you are the only player who has that type of bag. You should not be ashamed of your new bag as it can give you a benefit over other players who still use the older over the shoulder strap type bag.
